Mayday, Pan-Pan, Sécurité: which and when
Mayday, Pan-Pan, Sécurité: quale e quando
- Mayday: people or vessel in grave and imminent danger, immediate help needed (fire, sinking, man overboard).
- Pan-Pan: urgency. Assistance is needed, but there is no grave and imminent danger (breakdown, broken rudder, minor illness).
- Sécurité (pronounced “say-cure-it-tay”): safety messages for everyone, for example a navigational hazard or a weather warning.
- The choice depends on how serious the situation is, not on the size of the boat.
Remember. At sea, VHF first: channel 16, DSC if you have it. By phone, in Italy, 1530.
Watch out. At sea use the VHF, not the phone: other boats hear you, the Coastguard can locate you and talk to lifeboats and helicopters. A mobile often has no signal.
