40 exercises from the Exercise book, the Bob Exam, the radar sheets and the manuals, solved step by step.

Topics and types of exercise

  1. 1The chart: position and distanceThis is how you fix where you are without GPS: read a position off the chart, plot one, and measure a distance in nautical miles with dividers.
  2. 2Speed, time and distanceThis tells you how far you have gone, how long you will take, and how fast you need to go, from three numbers and one formula.
  3. 3True, magnetic and compass coursesThis takes you from the course you plot on the chart (true) to the one you read on the compass, and back, by applying variation and deviation.
  4. 4Dead reckoning and estimated positionThis lets you estimate where you are at a given time from a known position, the course and distance run, and the tidal stream.
  5. 5Course to steer in a tidal streamIt tells you which heading to hold to actually reach B when a stream pushes you sideways, and how long the leg will take.
  6. 6Fix by two compass bearingsIt tells you where you are without GPS, by crossing the directions in which you see two conspicuous charted objects.
  7. 7Height of tide and depth of waterIt tells you how much water there is under the boat at a given time, and when there is enough to pass or enter.
