At night you see coloured lights

Navigation lights of a power-driven vessel at night, seen from ahead and from asternSeen from aheadSeen from astern
The same power-driven vessel at night: from ahead and from astern you see different lights.
  • At night you do not see the vessel: you see her lights.
  • The lights tell you three things: what kind of vessel she is, what she is doing, and which side you are looking at.
  • If you can read them, you know at once whether you must give way and where the other vessel is heading.
  • Lights are shown from sunset to sunrise, and by day too when visibility is restricted.

Remember. Learn them in this order: first the arcs of visibility, then the power-driven vessel, then the exceptions (sailing, towing, fishing, not under command, anchored).

Watch out. Lights are shown from sunset to sunrise, and by day too in restricted visibility (Rule 20).
