Channel 16 and channel 70: where you talk, where you don't

Canale 16 e canale 70: dove si parla, dove no

  • Channel 16: distress, safety and calling. You listen here and make your Mayday, Pan-Pan and Sécurité calls.
  • Channel 70: reserved for digital DSC calls, that is, the alert. Nobody talks on 70: voice goes on 16.
  • Before leaving, check the VHF: switched on, squelch set, channel 16 selected.
  • In Italy the sea emergency number is 1530, but VHF is better than a phone: every vessel nearby can hear it.
  • To use the VHF in the ordinary way you need a certificate: the SRC or, in Italy, the restricted radiotelephone operator's certificate. Not for a distress call.

Remember. 16 is for voice (distress, safety, calling); 70 is for the digital DSC alert.
