The IALA buoyage system

Il mare ha la sua segnaletica

The IALA marks: lateral, cardinal, isolated danger, safe water, special, new danger.
  • The IALA system (Recommendation R1001) marks channels and dangers, with the same rules all over the world.
  • There are six types of mark: lateral, cardinal, isolated danger, safe water, special and new danger (emergency wreck marking).
  • Each mark is identified by its colour, shape, topmark (the figure on top) and, at night, its light.
  • A mark gives information, but responsibility for navigation stays with the skipper: always check the chart too.

Remember. At any buoy, ask yourself in this order: what colour is it? What topmark does it carry? What light does it show at night?

Buoy boa|Topmark miraglio (la figura in cima)|Lateral mark segnale laterale|Cardinal mark segnale cardinale|Isolated danger mark pericolo isolato|Safe water mark acque sicure|Special mark segnale speciale|Emergency wreck mark nuovo pericolo (es. un relitto)
