The four-stroke cycle

I quattro tempi del diesel

Diesel engine, stroke 1 of 4: induction1 · Inductionairinlet openexhaust shutinjectorpistonconnecting rodcrankshaft

Remember. A diesel runs on two things: air and clean fuel. The battery is only needed to start it, not to keep it running (except on engines with a stop solenoid).

Watch out. A diesel has no spark plug: ignition comes from the hot compressed air, with the injector spraying the fuel. Drawings with a spark plug show petrol engines.
