Choosing an anchorage

| Question | What to look at |
|---|---|
| Will I be sheltered? | The maximum protection from wind, swell and tide. |
| What is the sea bed like? | The chart symbols: mud and sand give better holding than rock or shingle. |
| What will the tide do? | The times and heights of the tide during your stay, so you do not ground as it falls. |
| Have I enough swinging room? | Allow for other boats and isolated rocks. |
The four questions for choosing an anchorage.
- The anchor symbol on the chart is only a recommendation: you do not have to anchor exactly there.
- Avoid anchoring on or near the leading line: other boats may be coming in.
- There is much less tidal flow in the bay than outside.
- The wind may shift: good shelter now may not be good shelter later.
Remember. Four questions before you drop it: am I sheltered? what is the sea bed like? what will the tide do? have I enough swinging room?
Watch out. Do not pick a spot where you may ground as the tide falls.
