What the examiner expects of a skipper

Can skipper a yacht and manage the crew	Run the boat and lead the crew, making the decisions.
Communication with crew	Communicating with the crew, before and during the passage.
Delegation of responsibility and watchkeeping organisation	Assigning tasks and organising the watches.
Preparing the yacht for sea and for adverse weather	Getting the boat ready for sea and for bad weather.
Tactics for heavy weather and restricted visibility	How you act in strong wind and sea and in poor visibility.
Emergency and distress situations	Handling emergencies and distress situations.
Victualling for a cruise and feeding at sea	Provisions for the cruise and meals at sea.
Customs procedures	Customs formalities, to be checked before departure.
Standards of behaviour and courtesy	Correct behaviour and good manners on board.

Section 5 of the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore syllabus, items worded as in the programme.

In each section of the syllabus the examiner expects the candidate to take full responsibility for the management of the yacht and crew.
For Yachtmaster Offshore, competence based on broad experience is expected.
For Yachtmaster Coastal, understanding is expected, even without having practised everything in different weather.

Remember. Delegating is part of the skipper's job, not a way of passing on responsibility: the examiner wants to see you take all of it.
